Regarding mixing different sized NSDs in the same pool...
GPFS has gotten somewhat smarter about striping over the years and also 
offers some options about how blocks are allocated over NSDs....   And 
then there's mmrestripe and its several options/flavors...

You probably do want to segregate NSDs into different pools if the 
performance varies significantly among them.

SO old advice may not apply 100%.
